North Carolina School Attendance Law

Good attendance is a very important part of school success. We need students present at school every day and on time. Excessive absences and tardies may effect a child's learning and their ability to be successful. Studies have shown students that miss instruction and are excessively tardy are more likely to perform poorly in school. If your child must be absent, please send in a note the following day stating the date, number of absences, reason for absences and your signature. The North Carolina Compulsory Attendance Law requires that absences be recorded as excused or unexcused. If your child accumulates excessive unexcused absences a referral will be made to the school social worker. If you have any questions or concerns about attendance or tardies, please contact your child's teacher or the school social worker.

Tips for Good Attendance

  • Setting an alarm clock with your child nightly beginning at an early age. This will assist with establishing a routine;

  • Setting out your child's clothing daily or weekly makes for a smooth morning transition;

  • Making lunches the night before;

  • Check bookbags nightly and be sure to read any communication that comes home from the classroom teacher;

  • Prepare for the next morning by having your child place their bookbags by the front door; and

  • Make sure your child has at least 9-10 hours of rest nightly.
