In light of HB 146, the Back to Basics Bill, which states, "The standard course of study shall include the requirement that the public schools provide instruction in cursive writing, so students create readable documents through legible cursive handwriting by the end of fifth grade," and since the current North Carolina Standard Course of Study only uses the word "print" and not "cursive," the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has included handwriting objectives from the 2004 Standard Course of Study as part of the 2010 adopted ELA standards within the Standard Course of Study (implemented in 2012-13).
