The Moore County Schools Maintenance Department provides maintenance and support to all 23 campuses of the school district. The department has 35 employees with a wide range of skills, experience and knowledge. The department is divided into several divisions with a common goal to serve and support the teaching staff. These include carpentry, electrical, painting and plumbing. Located at the maintenance shop is a garage for vehicle fleet service and repairs as well as a cabinet shop, which constructs all the cabinets, bookcases, etc., for the schools.
The maintenance department is charged with several other functions as well. The maintenance department maintains a central warehouse for storing supplies, enabling bulk supplies and material purchases for greater savings. The department practices Integrated Pest Management for safe pest control at all the schools. Audio-visual and telephone repairs and services are the responsibility of the maintenance department. Maintenance is also responsible for the energy management systems that control the schedules for heat and air conditioning as well as the temperatures within the school buildings. These systems save hundreds of thousands of dollars each year by controlling temperatures and providing conditioned air only when necessary. The principals simply have to request heat or air conditioning for after-school events to have it added to the schedule.
The maintenance department also has an area maintenance employee that is assigned to one or more campuses. This employee is responsible to meet the daily maintenance needs of each individual campus as assigned. These employees learn their campuses in detail and are very effective at maintaining the physical plants at each campus and meeting specialized needs.
The maintenance department functions from a specialized work order system to track requests and needs to ensure timely completion. This system also serves as an excellent means to systematically file completed requests by campus and date to assist with budget and planning purposes.
