Limited Learner Permit Requirements
1. When you are at least fifteen years old, take the Drivers Education Certificate issued to you by your instructor and turn it in to your guidance counselor. **Please note that once signed, this paper is only valid for 30 days. If it should expire before you obtain a permit, you must bring a parent/ guardian to the school to get a new form.
2. Take the following to the DMV:
- Parent/guardian
- $21.50 (as of July 1, 2024, this rate increases to $25.50)
- Drivers Education Certificate of Completion
- Driving Eligibility Certificate
- Document verifying age and identity
- Document proving NC residency
- Social Security card or one document proving they have a Social Security number
- Driver’s license (card or license number) of supervising driver(s)
3. At the DMV office you must take and pass the following tests:

- Vision Test (you must see at least 20/30 in one eye)
- Traffic Sign Test (12 pictures, at least 9 correct to pass, remember colors and shapes)
- 25-question Driving Knowledge test (at least 20 correct to pass).
