Early Admission to Kindergarten

The 1997 General Assembly passed legislation allowing a child who has reached his/her fourth (4th) birthday by April 16 to enter kindergarten if he or she demonstrates an extraordinary level of academic ability and maturity. In determining eligibility, the principal shall convene a committee of educational professionals who will assist him/her in making decisions about each individual child.

Application for early admission to kindergarten must take place within the first 30 days of the school's instructional year.

The process for early admission to kindergarten is outlined below.

The following link provides information from the State Board of Education Policy Manual and details the standards for early admission to kindergarten.

After reviewing this information, parents/guardians who are interested in the process should print a copy of the application below and contact a licensed psychologist to arrange for testing. Testing may not take place before April 16th following the child's fourth birthday.

If you have additional questions about the process, please contact the Specialist for Advanced Studies, Diane Fey.
