American with Disabilities Act/Section 504

Coordination and Compliance
The responsibilities for system-wide implementation of the requirements of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act for students lie within the Student Support Services Department. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a broad civil rights act prohibiting discrimination against individuals with disabilities. Students who have disabilities that substantially limit their functioning at school and who are not in need of specialized instruction within special education are served through Section 504 plans. A Section 504 plan is developed to ensure that students with disabilities are not discriminated against due to their disabilities within the educational setting. These plans address accommodations that are deemed necessary for the student to access his/her educational program.

Consideration for Section 504 eligibility entails a specific, detailed and timely process that school professionals must follow. Each school in Moore County Schools has a 504 Contact/Coordinator who can assist with parent questions. The school system's Section 504/ADA Coordinator is  LaShunda Maynor in Student Support Services. She may be reached at 910.947.2976.

Additional information about the initial non-discrimination act is available from the U.S. Department of Education,

In addition, an update to the act went into effect on January 1, 2009. An article entitled "Disability Discrimination" from the U.S. Department of Education contains more information about the 2009 amendment. Another good source of information about the importance of eliminating discrimination of the basis of disability is; "Protecting Students With Disabilities".
