The Operations Department supervises the maintenance, planning and construction, transportation, and child nutrition departments. Our goal is to provide a safe environment that fosters increased student achievement and learning.

John Birath, Executive Officer for Operations
John Birath has served as Moore County Schools’ executive officer for operations since 2014. In that capacity, he oversees planning and construction, maintenance, purchasing, transportation and child nutrition. He is also responsible for leading Moore County Schools through is Master Facilities Plan, and over the next several years will lead the effort to construction four new schools by 2021.
Previously, Birath served as director for facilities, planning, construction and safety at Harnett County Schools. He also served as a principal with SfL+a Architects in Fayetteville, N.C., which specializes in construction of facilities in the k-12 and higher education sectors. Overall, Birath has successfully overseen the design and construction of more than $265 million of k-12 education facilities and more than $100 million in higher education facilities.
Prior to his move to North Carolina, Birath had extensive experience as an architect and project manager in Akron, Ohio. He is an active member of the American Institute of Architects, having served on local and state boards, and is a current state board member of the Association for Learning Environments.
Birath earned a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Kent State University.
