Frequently Asked Questions:
How long are the classes?
Each student MUST have at least 30 hours of classroom hours and at least 6 hours of behind the wheel driving with a certified instructor. Students will drive in pairs, so each student will drive for 6 hours and observe for 6 hours.
Can my student take an online driver education course instead of classes through Moore County Schools?
No, online Asynchronous classes, such as, dmvedu.org, etc., are not accepted as a valid Driver Education course in the state of NC.
How do I register my student for a class?
Please look at the below class schedules for North Moore, Pinecrest, and Union Pines High Schools. There will be a registration date included with the class information. Please note that North Moore class registration is IN PERSON at North Moore only. Pinecrest and Union Pines class registration is online only.
Please visit the register page on registration day: https://www.ncmcs.org/students/driver_education/register
There will be a registration link available on registration day from 8 am – 5 pm. The first 35 “eligible” students will be added to the class and the remaining students will be on the waitlist for that class session only. (Pinecrest and Union Pines classes ONLY)
The register page contains information that is on the Google form registration, so you can get the information prior and be prepared.
My student plays a sport or participates in other extra-curricular activities. Can my student participate in both?
Please consider extra-curricular activities when planning. Contact coaches and other after-school activities supervisors to avoid scheduling conflicts. All class registration is non-refundable and not transferable to other classes. Please make sure your student is able to attend classes that they are registered for. Students are only able to miss up to 3 hours of class before being dismissed from class (they must make this time up in a later class period).
My student missed too much class time, what does this mean?
Students missing more than 3 hours will need to register for class again and pay the $65 fee again. If your student paid a reduced fee for the first class, you will be required to pay $65 for the next class.
I see that there are a few virtual class options, what is necessary to take this class?
Virtual classes will have live instruction for the duration of the 30 class hours.
All FINAL exams will be taken in person. Students that do not have their camera on during the class will be considered absent during the time their camera is off and will need to make up time. If any time missed is over 3 hours, the student will need to register for another class at a later date and pay the $65 fee again. Also, please make sure you are an active participant during class time.
You will receive an email closer to the class date with a Google Meet code and class information.
Who is eligible to take driver education classes through Moore County Schools?
To participate in Moore County Schools Driver Education classes, students must be aged 14 1/2 (PRIOR to the first day of class) to 17 (must be under 18).
Students MUST attend school in Moore County. Students from North Moore, Pinecrest, Union Pines, Moore County Middle Schools (as long as the student is already 14 1/2), Moore County Registered Home Schools (MUST provide documentation), NC Charter schools (In Moore County), or Private NC schools (in Moore County), can register for any class scheduled below. Students that reside and attend schools in other counties, are not eligible to attend classes in Moore County.
What does my student need to bring to class?
- Writing utensil and paper for notes
- Snack/food (students MUST clean up any trash or food prior to leaving)
- Original Social Security card AND Proof of ID (certified birth certificate, valid military ID, valid NC state ID, valid passport are accepted) before a student can complete the driving portion of the Driver Education program. We do not copy or keep the documentation. It is for verification only. No copies allowed.
My student is no longer able to take the class they registered for. Can you refund or transfer them to a different class?
No, all class registration is non-refundable and not transferable to other classes.
Will my student have classes on the weekend?
Classes are not held on weekends (Saturdays or Sundays), early dismissal days, teacher workdays or if school activities are canceled because of inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstance. Behind the wheel driving can take part on the weekends and at night.
Class Schedules are subject to change. If the schedule is changed, the scheduled school will make an announcement or the instructor will notify students.
How long will my student have to wait after they complete the classroom portion of the program?
We are averaging up to 6 months in between Classroom and Behind the Wheel Instruction. Over the summer, we work with MANY students, and they all need to drive for 6 hours (and observe for 6 hours).
An instructor will reach out to you to schedule as soon as they are able.
Older students are given priority to schedule BTW instruction, but please also be aware that class dates are also a consideration in assigning instructors. Remember that vision testing and document verification is the “starting point” for entering the BTW queue.
We made an appointment for our student at the DMV for their permit testing. When will they drive?
Due to the amount of students that are waiting for the behind the wheel portion of the program, we are not able to give you an exact time. We ask families to hold off from making appointments before an instructor contacts you to schedule drive time because we are not responsible for missed DMV appointments made in advance of your child receiving BTW instruction.
What do I need to have my child bring to THEIR SCHOOL PRIOR to their DMV appointment, for their permit?
If you attend Connect Academy - please go to West Pine Elementary School. If you homeschool or attend a verified online school - you will need to obtain an eligibility certificate from the NC Department of Non Public Education.
- N.C. Driving Eligibility Certificate, signed by a parent/ legal guardian (BTW instructor will give to the students after successful completion of the program)
- Driver's License Eligibility Issues form, signed by a parent/ legal guardian AND the student (BTW instructor will give to the students after successful completion of the program)
- Certificate of Completion (BTW instructor will give to the students after successful completion of the program)
- Passing 70% of classes
- School Fees Paid (Moore County Schools only)
Please make sure students are adhering to the school dress code policy and student handbook (behavior) during class and the Behind the Wheel portion of the program. Failure to do so can result in being dismissed from class.
High School principals are not involved with Driver Education. If you have any questions regarding the program, please reach out directly to the Driver Education Coordinator.
