Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (CDM)

Credit by Demonstrated Mastery is a process by which students earn credit for a course without requiring the student to complete any seat time in the course. Students must complete a 2 phase process to earn credit for the course. Some students may choose to complete the CDM process for the purpose of accelerating and moving into another more advanced course.

Credit by Demonstrated Mastery is available for students in grades 9-12 for high school courses and in grades 6-8 for high school courses offered in middle school. Please note that middle school students may only attempt CDM during the spring to inform Fall course scheduling.

If you have questions about whether a course is eligible for CDM or about the CDM process, please contact the Specialist for Advanced Studies.

Credit by Demonstrated Mastery Process

The student and their parent(s)/guardian(s) schedule a meeting with the HS counselor to discuss the CDM process, course options, and impact of a successful CDM on the student's schedule and course progression.

If the student decides to move forward with the process, they should complete and submit the Credit by Demonstrated Mastery Application (Spanish version) to their HS Counselor.

Students will complete the Phase 1 assessment during the next available testing window. Phase 1 involves taking the EOC or locally developed final exam for the course.

Students meet earn a minimum scale score in EOC courses to move to Phase 2.
Biology > 261
English II > 565
NC Math 1 > 563
NC Math 3 > 563

In a non-EOC course, students must earn a 90% or better on the final exam to move to Phase 2.

If a student does not earn the minimum score necessary on Phase 1, the CDM process ends here.

The CDM attempt is NOT recorded on the student’s transcript and the student will be scheduled to complete the course.

If the student earns a qualifying score on the EOC or locally developed final exam, they move on to Phase 2.

Phase 2
is a locally developed performance -based task designed to allow students to apply the skills required to demonstrate mastery of the course standards at a standard-level.

Students turn in the Phase 2 artifact according to the timeline provided by the Specialist for Advanced Studies.

A district team reviews the Phase 2 artifact for demonstration of foundational knowledge and application of course standards at a standard-level.

The student is notified by the Specialist for Advanced Studies of the district team’s recommendation regarding CDM.

If the district team determines the student did not demonstrate appropriate mastery of the course standards, the student does not qualify for CDM of the course.

The student will be notified of the appeals process.

If the district team determines the student demonstrates appropriate mastery of the course standards, the student qualifies for CDM credit.

The course and credit will be noted on the student transcript and scheduling will be adjusted accordingly.
