N.C. Superintendent of Public Instruction Catherine Truitt spent half a day in Moore County this week to see how public schools are making up for time lost during the coronavirus pandemic.

About 1,800 Moore County Schools students are enrolled in what the district is calling the “PowerUp Summer Academy.” Where the district always offers summer school, it’s usually an effort to address specific learning gaps between individual students and grade-level proficiency in math and reading.

This year, teachers have a much broader mission: to help students whose learning suffered during the four-to-six months when students were limited to virtual learning three days a week.

Public school systems around North Carolina have put similar programs in place to comply with state legislation requiring them to offer 150 hours, or 30 days, of in-person learning this summer. Read More...
