Preschool Program Description Classroom Based Services

Moore County Schools Preschool has nine high quality developmentally appropriate, inclusive classrooms located on the following elementary school campuses:

Aberdeen Primary
Carthage Elementary
Robbins Elementary
Southern Pines Primary
Vass-Lakeview Elementary
West End Elementary

Each classroom is licensed by the Division of Child Development, and is a five star center. Classes include a blended group of children ages three through five including typically developing children who pay tuition to attend, children who qualify for exceptional education services and children in the NC Pre-Kindergarten program.

A certified teacher and teacher assistant(s) provide a safe and nurturing environment for children three to five years old. The program promotes the healthy emotional, cognitive, communication, social and physical development of all children. The "Creative Curriculum for Early Childhood" is used to plan appropriate learning activities and take into account each child's individual needs, interests and developmental levels in all areas. We focus on learning activities and materials which are concrete, real and relevant to the children. The environment allows for active exploration & interaction with adults and peers to aid in the development of the whole child, so each will be well prepared to enter kindergarten.

Community Based Services

The Exceptional Education Preschool Program provides screening and evaluation services to children ages three to non-kindergarten five for whom parents have developmental concerns. Children who meet the state's eligibility as a student with a disability may receive educational services either in one of our 9 preschool classrooms located on Moore County School primary and elementary school campuses, or by itinerant therapists who go into community preschool, Head Start and child care programs. Families whose children are not enrolled in a community program may also arrange for services with the itinerant staff.

Children enrolled in the Preschool Exceptional Education Program are provided the necessary related services to fully access their special education. This may include, but is not limited to, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech/language therapy, assistive technology, specialized services for deaf or visually impaired students, audiology or transportation.
