May 14, 2025 Announcement: On May 7, staff from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) and school employees across the state received messages from threat actors claiming to possess data from the PowerSchool data breach that occurred in late 2024. NCDPI conducted an initial investigation and believes the threat actors have access to the same data tables that were originally compromised. NCDPI has notified the appropriate law enforcement agencies, who are actively investigating the incident.

Moore County Schools has not received any reports of employees being contacted by threat actors, and we will continue to monitor for suspicious emails.

Support Services Available:
We understand that this is a concerning development, and we remain committed to keeping our staff and families informed about the support services available to help protect your personal information.

PowerSchool has extended its contract with Experian to allow affected individuals to sign up for identity protection and credit monitoring services through July 1, 2025, at no cost to affected students and educators.
Services include:
  • Two years of complimentary identity protection for all affected students and educators
  • Two years of complimentary credit monitoring for all affected adult students and educators
  • Services are available regardless of whether a Social Security number was compromised
Additional protection: Impacted users may also freeze their identity for free through the North Carolina Department of Justice.

Important Reminder: PowerSchool has taken full responsibility for this data breach. There was nothing NCDPI, Moore County Schools, or any other public school unit in North Carolina could have done to prevent it.
