Moore County Schools is proud to announce that Pinehurst Elementary School has been named one of four inaugural North Carolina Blue Ribbon Schools by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). This new state-led recognition program honors schools that demonstrate exceptional academic performance, significant student growth, and a strong commitment to excellence.
Pinehurst Elementary received distinction in both statewide award categories, Exemplary High Performing and Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing, placing it among the highest-performing schools in North Carolina. This honor reflects the school’s innovative instructional practices, its focus on the whole child, and the strong community partnerships that enrich student learning and success.
The North Carolina Blue Ribbon Schools program was established following the discontinuation of the United States Department of Education’s National Blue Ribbon Program in order to continue recognizing exemplary schools across the state. This year’s honorees were nominated based on 2023–2024 accountability results. Pinehurst Elementary has also earned an “A” performance grade for three consecutive years beginning with the 2022–2023 school year. This sustained achievement demonstrates the hard work and dedication of the school’s staff, students, and families.
Superintendent Dr. Tim Locklair said, “Pinehurst Elementary represents the very best in public education. Their success reflects a culture rooted in high expectations, strong instructional leadership, and deep care for every child. These roots have been built over several years of hard work and efforts. With that in mind, I am extremely proud of former Principal Ashlee Ciccone, current Principal Selena McNeil, the Pinehurst staff, and the entire school community for achieving this well-deserved honor.”
Pinehurst Elementary was formally recognized at the State Board of Education meeting in Raleigh on December 4, where Principal McNeil and district leaders accepted the award on behalf of the school community. The Moore County Board of Education also celebrated the school at its regular business meeting this evening, where Principal McNeil accepted a recognition certificate from the Board.
Board of Education Chair Dr. Robin Calcutt said, “The accomplishments of Pinehurst Elementary are a testament to the dedication of its teachers, the leadership of Principal McNeil, and the support of families and community partners who believe in the power of education. Their commitment to excellence has set a standard that inspires our entire district.”
Moore County Schools extends heartfelt congratulations to Principal McNeil and the Pinehurst Elementary staff, students, and families whose collective efforts made this achievement possible.
