Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program to promote the love of reading among students.

Moore County Schools (MCS) held its Middle School Battle of the Books tournament at the Robert E. Lee Auditorium at Pinecrest High School on March 11, 2022. Students were excited to compete face to face for the first time since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Students work with each other to compete in a fun, academic-based competition that helps them improve reading skills, mature in their choices of reading materials and acquire a broader knowledge base.

Prior to the competition, The Sandhills Enrichment Fund; an affiliate of the English Speaking Union presented a generous grant that will be used to purchase books for future Battle of the Books tournaments. MCS thanks the following personnel (pictured below) for their contribution:

Clem Jowett – President, English Speaking Union
Nick Christopher – Board Member, English Speaking Union

Fran Grandinetti – Chair, Sandhills Enrichment Fund

Linda Sapp – Board Member, Sandhills Enrichment Fund

After 15 rounds of competition, New Century Middle School (pictured below) was awarded first place medals and their school name will be added to the Middle School Battle of the Books District Plaque. New Century Middle School went on and represented MCS at the Regional Battle of the Books competition on Friday, April 8 at the Cumberland County Educational Resource Center. We are so proud of the Centurions for all of the hard work they put in this year and for representing their school and district proudly!
