Dr. Betty Wells Brown Appointed to NCSBA Legislative Committee
The North Carolina School Boards Association (NCSBA) has named Moore County Schools Board Member Dr. Betty Brown an at-large member of the NCSBA Legislative Committee.
“These individuals will do the work that leads to the adoption of the association’s legislative agenda,” remarked NCSBA President Brenda Stephens, Orange County. “They will help us design a survey to gather information from our members and then develop a draft agenda for adoption at the 2020 meeting of NCSBA’s delegate assembly.”
In addition to the agenda, committee members will review ongoing legislative activity and provide guidance to the Board of Directors on legislative matters. This year’s legislative committee is comprised of a subset of the NCSBA Board of Directors, the eight district presidents, and ten at-large school board members that were nominated by their school board and appointed by the NCSBA president.
The committee will meet later this year, and its members will serve a two-year term.
Dr. Wells Brown was elected to the Moore County Schools Board of Education in 2016, representing District 4 which includes Pinecrest High; Sandhills Farm Life, McDeeds Creek and Southern Pines elementary schools, and Southern Pines Primary. She serves as the chair of the policy committee and as legislative liaison for the Board of Education.
Dr. Wells Brown has worked in education for more than four decades at all grade levels, from kindergarten through graduate school. She has served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Chair of the Department of Educational Specialties at UNC-Pembroke, and is a past president of the North Carolina Reading Association,
Dr. Wells Brown has a B.A. in Elementary Education from Lander College in Greenwood, S.C., a Master of Education in Reading form the University of South Carolina, an Education Specialist degree in Administration and Supervision from The Citadel and a Doctor of Philosophy, Reading and Children’s Literature from the University of South Carolina.
NCSBA was established in 1937 as an advocate for public school education. Its mission is to provide leadership and services that enable local boards of education to govern effectively.
