Steel beams and concrete walls, the first bones of the new Pinehurst Elementary Schools, now loom over the cleared ground where an entire school stood for 80 years.

What school board members, county commissioners and other elected officials celebrated on Tuesday morning, along with a few classes of third graders, wasn’t so much a groundbreaking as the first signs of renewal.

“I have neighbors who came here and graduated from the high school who live across the street, who live behind you, and I think everybody’s excited about the opportunity to build on this very site,” said Pinehurst Mayor Pro Tem Judy Davis. “I look forward to having you all back in the neighborhood.”

The new Pinehurst Elementary is the fourth new school to get underway for Moore County Schools in the last two years.
